training3.jpgThe Strategic Value of Engagement
Building a Management and Measurement Strategy Workshop
When it comes to investments in people, namely training, development, meetings, events, incentives, rewards, recognition and loyalty programs, most companies spend the majority of time focused on what they do and how to do it. Busyness pulls them increasingly into tactical roles within the organization and inhibits their ability to contribute value. The resulting loss of a top down strategic focus on these programs can cause misalignment with corporate vision, mission and objectives, and can reduce effectiveness of these investments.

Furthermore, without the ability to accurately and credibly link program activity to business results, leadership tends to look at them as a cost center rather than a key strategic investment that warrants the same kind of attention and direction as other capital expenditures of similar magnitude..

The gap can be bridged by the development of a cogent approach to managing programs using a portfolio management approach, the development of a measurement scorecard and credibly measuring results, including ROI, to prove value, defend existing programs, justify future programs and fuel evidence-based continuous improvement in the organization.

The measurement scorecard is a valuable tool which enables a company to manage a portfolio of programs. In most scenarios, every program is evaluated at some level. This evaluation is completed on a program per program basis and is the micro evaluation. Portions of the micro evaluation data are taken and combined into a larger, overall scorecard, a macro level scorecard. The macro view provides senior executives with a sense of the value of the department’s activity and can be used to demonstrate results as they pertain to the outcome management most highly desires and values. A quarterly review of results can serve as a powerful way in which to guide future decisions and create a more strategic approach to managing the portfolio.
